Technical Bulletin No. 0976: Selected VOC Emissions from Brown Stock Washers, Unbleached Paper Machines and Black Liquor Oxidation Systems at Post-MACT Kraft Pulp Mills
NCASI recently developed a new sampling method for alcohols and aldehydes which yields accurate and precise low level emissions data for pulp and paper mill sources. This method involves sampling with impingers containing an aqueous solution of o-benzylhydroxylamine (BHA). The BHA in the aqueous impinger solution reacts with the aldehydes to form aldehyde oximes, which are extracted from the aqueous solution with hexane and analyzed via gas chromatography with nitrogen/phosphorous-specific detection.
