Accurately determining VOC emissions from commercial (full-scale) softwood lumber drying kilns has proven to be extremely difficult due to their design and operating characteristics. Alternatives to testing commercial lumber kilns have been proposed including the use of laboratory (small) scale kilns. The advantage of using a small-scale kiln is that exhaust gas flow rates can be more accurately measured.
