Technical Bulletin No. 0730: Effects of Intensive Silviculture on Breeding and Wintering Birds in North Carolina Pocosins
Pocosins are evergreen shrub bogs found on the Coastal Plain of the southeastern United States. An increase in the intensive management of pocosins for wood products in recent decades has sparked interest in the effects that this management has on wildlife. The author used fixed-radius, circular-plot bird surveys to assess the effects of intensive silviculture on the avian communities in these North Carolina pocosin habitats: open-canopy pine plantations, closed-canopy pine plantations, commercially thinned pine plantations, unmanaged short pocosins, and unmanaged tall pocosins.
