Technical Bulletin No. 0653: Aquatic Community Effects of Biologically Treated Bleached Kraft Mill Effluent Before and After Conversion to Increased Chlorine Dioxide Substitution:

Outdoor experimental streams used previously in studies with effluent from a conventional bleached kraft mill were used in a follow-up study after the mill had converted to 70% chlorine dioxide substitution. These studies included measurements of effluent chemical characteristics as well as detailed monitoring of the rainbow trout population and supporting food web. Increased chlorine dioxide substitution and other aspects of mill modernization resulted in decreases in effluent chlorinated organic chemical concentrations, AOX, BOD, color, and TSS.
