Technical Bulletin No. 0652: A Laboratory and Field Evaluation of Portable Gas Chromatographs for Measuring Reduced Sulfur Compounds in Kraft Pulp Mill Workplace Atmospheres

The suitability of portable gas chromatographs for measuring reduced sulfur (TRS) compounds in kraft process workplace atmospheres was studied. Instruments from three different manufacturers were evaluated: the Photovac 10S Plus with a photoionization detector (PID), the HNU Model 311 with a PID, and the Sentex Scentograph with an argon ionization detector. Analytes of interest in this study were the TRS gases commonly encountered in kraft mill environments, hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan, dimethyl sulfide, and dimethyl disulfide.
