Technical Bulletin No. 0649: An Investigation of Factors that Influence Chloroform Generation from Recovered Paper Fiber Bleaching with Hypochlorite

The factors that influence chloroform generation from recovered fiber bleaching with hypochlorite were studied. Laboratory experiments were used to study factors affecting chloroform generation and to assess the kinetics of the process. Factors examined were (a) degree of pulp washing, (b) cooking temperature, (c) hypochlorite charge, (d) pH and temperature in the bleaching process, (e) pulp consistency, and (f) recycled paper composition. Field surveys were conducted at five recovered fiber mills with hypochlorite bleaching.
