Technical Bulletin No. 0640: Sulfur Capture in Combination Bark Boilers

Sulfur dioxide emission data from eight combination boilers firing bark, wood residue, coal and oil were analyzed to examine the possibility of sulfur capture by the bark/wood residue ash. Sulfur dioxide emission data from five boilers at the exit of dry particulate collection devices and two boilers at the entrance to wet scrubbers showed sulfur capture efficiencies ranging from 0 to 80 percent. A regression curve in which X = ton wood residue per lb sulfur in combination fuel, Y = percentage sulfur capture efficiency, and a and b = constants was obtained.
