Technical Bulletin No. 0637: Storm Water from Log Storage Sites: A Literature Review and Case Study

This bulletin provides a literature review of research on storm-water runoff from log sort yards and storage sites. Some water quality concerns include: (1) organic leachates, particulates, and foam from wood and bark, (2) sediment from sort-yard erosion, and (3) greases and oils from sort-yard vehicles and associated mill machinery. Some water quality control options that have been identified in the literature include: (1) use of oil/water separators, (2) detention and skimming ponds to remove floatable and settleable solids, (3) recycling of wet-deck irrigation water, (4) waste wood and bark management on the deck, and (5) submerged diffuser outlets designed to avoid foam formation.
