Technical Bulletin No. 0605: Chloroform Generation at Bleach Plants with Low Molecular Chlorine Usage Split Chlorination

Studies of bleach plant chloroform generation were conducted at one bleach plant with split (three-point) chlorination, two bleach plants with extended delignification, two bleach plants with high chlorine dioxide substitution, and five bleach plants with oxygen delignification. Both hardwood and softwood bleaching were studied. Laboratory bleaching studies were also conducted to examine the effect of chlorine dioxide substitution on chloroform generation. At the bleach plant with split chlorination, no significant difference in chloroform generation was observed between three-point and one-point chlorination.
