Technical Bulletin No. 0578: Impact of Burning Oil as Auxiliary Fuel in Kraft Recovery Furnaces Upon SO2 Emissions
The sulfur dioxide emission impact of burning medium sulfur oil as auxiliary fuel in kraft recovery furnaces has been examined. Mill-generated CEMS sulfur dioxide data from three recovery furnaces and the results of field tests conducted on recovery furnaces at two mills where differing levels of medium sulfur oil were fired during both steady state operation and startup/shutdown periods have been analyzed. The CEMS data reveal no impact of oil firing on 12-hour and 24-hour average sulfur dioxide emissions from the three mills.
