Technical Bulletin No. 0550: Development and Application of a Mathematical Model for Predicting BOD and TSS Removal in Polishing Ponds Following Aerated Stabilization

It is estimated that over one half of the aerated stabilization basins (ASBs) used by the pulp and paper industry are followed by polishing ponds. Industry personnel using the NCASI ASB model to simulate performance of treatment processes incorporating polishing ponds were previously not able to include the impact of these ponds in their analysis. In response, a mathematical model of BOD and TSS removal in polishing ponds was developed. It (a) describes the development of the polishing pond model, (b) presents the model results when applied to eighteen (18) industry polishing ponds, and (c) provides guidance for use of the model on personal computers.
