Technical Bulletin No. 0522: Review of Minimum Management Requirements for Indicator Species: Pine Marten and Pileated Woodpecker
NCASI reviewed documents prepared by the United States Forest Service that set standards and guidelines for a variety of wildlife species that seem vulnerable to reduction of mature and older forest habitats following timber harvest. Among several vulnerable species that inhabit Pacific Northwest forests are the northern spotted owl, pine marten, and pileated woodpecker. These species were designated as management indicator species, which are focal points in management and whose population trends are believed to represent the effects of forest management on a large number of other species which use mature and old-growth forests for part or all of their life cycles.
