Technical Bulletin No. 0434: A Study of TRS Measurement Methods
In 1981, EPA proposed Method 16A as an alternative to chromatographic Method 16 for determining total reduced sulfur (TRS) emissions from kraft industry sources. At the time Method 16A was proposed in the Federal Register, it was expected that i would be promulgated in a short time. Method 16A incorporated sulfur dioxide removal followed by thermal oxidation of the residual TRS to sulfur dioxide collection of the sulfur dioxide in a hydrogen peroxide solution, and measurement of the sulfate formed. However, after Method 16A was proposed, questions were raised by EPA quality assurance staff about the possibility of TRS losses in Method 16A’s sampling system.
