Technical Bulletin No. 0431: Landfill Gas Generation, Migration, Monitoring, and Control

The bulletin draws heavily from research conducted on refuse landfills to identify factors that impact combustible gas generation and migration. A review of this information, combined with limited data from studies of gas production from pulp and paper mill sludges, provides the basis for several observations. First, it is clear that, under the correct conditions, significant amounts of combustible gas can be formed during the anaerobic decomposition of pulp and paper mill sludges, a condition existing in landfills containing these materials.
