Technical Bulletin No. 0399: A Study of Methods for Reducing Chloroform Concentrations in Bleached Pulp Mill Effluents

This study was undertaken to examine alternate chloroform reduction technologies in case they should be required and to gain a better understanding of the limiting factors in chloroform reduction in existing waste treatment systems. Following a review of potentially available removal technologies, air stripping was selected as the one appearing to be most practical for study; chloroform removal efficiency was then studied using a bench scale pilot apparatus on individual and combined bleachery effluent streams. The effectiveness of cooling towers at three mills in chloroform reduction on whole mill effluents was also determined.
