Technical Bulletin No. 0332: Chlorinated Organics in Bleach Plant Effluents of Pulp and Paper Mills

The paper summarizes (a) the chemical characteristics of untreated bleachery effluents and (b) some of the biological effects on the aquatic environment caused by effluents which have not received biological treatment. The contents of the paper go further to explain the significant change in the chemical composition of bleached mill effluents after biological treatment. The favorable observations made in the Council's controlled stream program, where fish are exposed to biologically treated bleached kraft effluents, are also summarized. Three other papers were presented which dealt with bleachery effluents and which will be included in the conference proceedings to be distributed later this year. Described were Swedish and Canadian studies on the mutagenicity of principally untreated bleachery mill effluents.
