Technical Bulletin No. 0268: The Measurement of Phenolic Substances and the Significance of Their Presence in Pulp Mill Effluents on Taste and Odor in Receiving Waters
It has been known for some time that certain simple phenolics are capable of imparting characteristic off-taste to potable water supplies and to fish taken from waters receiving effluents from by-product coke, synthetic resin and chemical manufacturing operations containing such compounds. In addition, chlorination of such water supplies is capable of intensifying and rendering such odors even more objectionable to some by giving them a "medicinal" quality. As a result, phenol limitations on certain effluents and many receiving waters used for fishing and water supply have materialized with growing frequency.
