Technical Bulletin No. 0267: An Evaluation of the Adsorptive Properties of Fly Ash and Bark-Derived Activated Char
This technical bulletin was first issued in 1973. At that time it was noted that substantial quantities of fly ash are generated at numerous pulp and paper mills by burning waste wood and/or bark (hogged fuel) and coal in steam-power boilers. The possible use of such fly ash for treatment of mill effluents had received periodic consideration within the industry for some time. Such investigations had, however, been conducted in the absence of basic characterization studies which would indicate the adsorption capacity of fly ash for selected materials used for expressing such capacity in standard terms. Interest had also been shown in the adsorption capacity of activated chars prepared from either hard-or softwood bark for effluent treatment purposes.
