Technical Bulletin No. 0111: A Study of Nitrogen Oxides Emissions from Large Kraft Recovery Furnaces (AQTB)

The source emission estimates required for completion of ambient air quality modeling requirements in satisfying the provisions of EPA's Prevention of Significant Deterioration regulation for new construction have identified the need for a reliable information base for estimating NO emissions from combustion sources in the forest products industry’s information on the level of NO emissions from wood residue-fired boilers, small and medium sizes kraft recovery furnaces and lime kilns has been reported in earlier technical bulletins. The attached technical bulletin reports on the findings of a study of NO emissions from large kraft recovery furnaces. This particular study on large kraft recovery furnaces, and representative of many being built today, was carried out following analysis of the NO emission data gathered on small and medium sizes which indicated that NO emissions increased with furnace size.
