Technical Bulletin No. 0040: A Guide for the Dissolved Oxygen and Biochemical Oxygen Demand Determinations

The enclosed report consists of an explanation of the techniques employed for the determination of dissolved oxygen and the biochemical oxygen demand on water and pulp and paper wastes. It was prepared by the Council's technical staff in the hope that by expanding the limited explanation of these tests presented in "Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Sewage”, mill chemists will be able to employ these tests with greater confidence and adopt them better to specific conditions. Since much attention to detail is required to obtain good and reasonably consistent results with the BOD test the procedure presented is set forth in complete detail together with information with regard to the care and adjustment of the equipment required.
