Technical Bulletin No. 0031: Kraft Mill Waste Report Supplemented Bio-activation
The enclosed report brings up to date, the results of laboratory research on the biological oxidation of kraft mill waste, conducted at Louisiana State University under the direction of Mr. W. A. Moggio. It appears from the findings, that oxidation rates can be stimulated to a considerable degree over those observed on simple storage of the clarified mill effluent. Initial maintenance of aerobic conditions, acclimated seeding, and nutrient salt addition were found to produce extremely high degrees of purification in short periods of time. An evaluation of each of these factors and determination of minimum requirements is now underway to determine the most economical and workable method for attaining desired results. It is anticipated that on completion of this phase of the laboratory studies, development work will be started in direct cooperation with the southern kraft mills.
