Special Report No. 92-10: Preliminary Report on Mammalian and Avian Species in Managed and Unmanaged Pocosins

This research was designed to investigate mammal and bird communities inhabiting managed and unmanaged pocosins, which are evergreen shrub bogs found on the Coastal Plain of the southeastern United States. Three managed habitats and 2 unmanaged habitats in coastal North Carolina were sampled. The managed habitats were 2 to 5, 9 to 11, and 18 to 21 year-old loblolly pine plantations (open, closed, and thinned canopies, respectively). The unmanaged habitats were natural short pocosins with dense shrub layers and scattered small pond pines, and natural tall pocosins with a canopy of taller pond pines and loblolly bays.
