Special Report No. 81-14: The Fuel Mix and Operating Characteristics of Power Boilers Capable of Firing Wood Residues

EPA is currently in the process of assembling the information base for development of New Source Performance Standards for fossil and non fossil fuel fired boilers. Information available to the Agency was lacking on the portion of wood fuel used to the total fuel mix on an individual boiler basis, and extent of time that mill experience showed that fossil fuel was relied upon as a fuel source even though the desire was to burn all wood residue. These as well as other information needs were judged as important to the industry in obtaining a proper definition of a wood fired boiler as well as addressing questions of the economic impact of alternate control technology for particulate and sulfur dioxide emissions that will arise in the development of New Source Performance Standards.
