CC-08-011: Information on Regulatory Drivers and Pulp and Paper Mills in the Mississippi River Basin Related to Nutrient Management and Gulf of Mexico Hypoxia
In June 2008, an action plan by the multi-agency Mississippi River/Gulf of Mexico Watershed Nutrient Task Force was released. The plan was subsequently reviewed by the National Research Council, which recommended that EPA develop a nutrient TMDL for the main stem of the Mississippi River. Because of the potential for these activities to affect nutrient discharge-related requirements in pulp and paper mill NPDES discharge permits, NCASI staff developed a report to provide information that may help mills to coordinate their activities related to the management of effluent nutrients in this and other regions of the country.
