Membership
NCASI welcomes into membership forest products companies and owners/managers of industrial woodlands in North America that share NCASI’s commitment to excellence in scientific research and also value scientific understanding as the basis for informed environmental regulation and sustainability reporting.
Sustaining membership is available to companies affiliated with the forest products industry, including consulting firms, suppliers, testing laboratories, and engineering firms, who also share NCASI’s commitment to scientific excellence as applied to this industry sector.
Member companies voluntarily support NCASI’s scientific research and information gathering activities through payment of annual membership dues and, in turn, enjoy access to a wealth of environmental and sustainability information that results from NCASI’s activities. NCASI provides research reports, current awareness letters on emerging environmental issues, newsletters, handbooks, reporting templates, computer models and software, workshops and technical meetings — all of which communicate the results of NCASI’s scientific undertakings. NCASI members also benefit from the improved quality of environmental regulations that are grounded in scientific understanding that is based on NCASI’s work. NCASI also provides expert technical assistance in matters as diverse as environmental compliance and reporting, permitting, clarification of regulations, characterization of emissions and discharges, application of environmental control technology, sustainable forest management practices, analytical methods, modeling, and sustainability assessment and reporting, among others.

U.S. Member Companies
Any U.S. company that manufactures pulp, paper, or solid wood products is eligible to apply for membership in NCASI, as are companies that own or manage industrial timberlands. Annual dues are self-reported and based on the size and nature of company operations. For manufacturing companies, dues are based on the amount and type of forest products produced in the prior calendar year. For companies that do not manufacture pulp or paper or solid wood products, dues are based on the acres of timberlands owned or managed. Dues range from $1,500 to more than $1.5 million. Membership status is offered only to entire companies, rather than to individual mill or forestland operations.
Currently, NCASI U.S. Member Companies represent more than 90% of the paper and paperboard produced in the United States, nearly 70% of the wood panels produced, and more than half of industrial timberland acreage in the U.S.

Canadian Member Companies
NCASI established a center in Montreal in 2002, and since then has executed a technical studies program that serves the specific interests of forest products companies in Canada. Canadian companies that manufacture pulp, paper, or solid wood products in Canada are eligible to become members of NCASI, as are companies that own or manage industrial forestlands in Canada. Membership status is offered only to entire companies, rather than to individual mill or forestland operations. A multinational company operating in Canada may be a Canadian member company and, at the same time, a member company in another category (U.S. member company, for example).
Canadian member companies’ dues are used exclusively to support the Canadian program. Membership dues rates are set each year by the Canadian Steering Committee. The dues rate for Canadian member companies is currently roughly one-fourth of the U.S. member companies’ rate. For Canadian companies that manufacture pulp, paper, or wood panels, dues are based on the company’s self-reported production in Canada of those products in the prior calendar year. Different products incur dues levies at different rates, depending on their environmental impact and the corresponding need for NCASI support. To assist in the calculation of membership dues, an Excel template and instructions will be provided upon request.
A Canadian Steering Committee composed of environmental managers from Canadian member companies meets regularly to identify new research opportunities, review progress on projects, and set the technical agenda.

Sustaining Members
Companies allied to the forest products industry—such as suppliers, consulting firms, analytical testing laboratories, and engineering firms—may gain access to NCASI resources by enrolling as Sustaining Members.
Although Sustaining Members are not governing members of NCASI as described in NCASI's bylaws, they do actively participate in the affairs of the organization, and they enjoy full access to NCASI's information resources for use in meeting the needs of NCASI Member Companies. Sustaining Membership is not available to government agencies, research institutions, universities, or public libraries.
Sustaining Members pay dues based on a portion of the revenue generated from their work with NCASI Member Companies specifically as it relates to NCASI's body of science, and a current area of focus for NCASI.

Companies Outside of North America
Membership is also open to forest products companies operating beyond North America. The annual dues rate is based on the amount and type of forest products produced, or acres of timberlands owned or managed.
