EPA releases draft report on condition of the nation’s wetlands

Recently, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced availability of a draft report titled The National Wetland Condition Assessment (NWCA) 2011: A Collaborative Survey of the Nation’s Wetlands (80 Federal Register 68536). The report documents results of the agency’s first evaluation of the ecological condition of the nation’s wetlands.

Society of American Foresters releases report on sustainable management of Louisiana cypress forests

The Society of American Foresters (SAF) recently released a report that offers recommendations for sustainable management of cypress forests in coastal areas of Louisiana. The report summarizes the current state of knowledge on cypress ecology and management and proposes methods for land managers to determine a site-specific sustainability category based on the totality of evidence obtained from soils, vegetation indicators, on‐site hydrologic monitoring, and salinity.

EPA soliciting public input on existing programs that address stormwater discharges from forest roads

Recently, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that it is soliciting public input and information on existing public and private sector programs that address stormwater discharges from forest roads. In the Federal Register notice, EPA indicates that the information will be used in responding to a remand in Environmental Defense Center, Inc. v. U.S. EPA that requires EPA to consider whether the Clean Water Act requires the Agency to regulate forest roads.

Paper summarizes literature addressing effectiveness of forestry best management practices

Following passage of the Clean Water Act, states developed and implemented forestry best management practices (BMPs) to reduce nonpoint source pollution during forest management. Recently, authors with Virginia Tech and NCASI published a paper summarizing BMP research that has appeared in the peer-reviewed literature and had a direct emphasis on how BMP implementation levels could affect soil erosion and/or stream sedimentation.

Journal publishes papers on Pan American biofuel and bioenergy sustainability

Currently, there are significant information gaps about implications of large-scale biofuels and bioenergy production for environmental systems and society. Recently, the journal Environmental Management published a special collection of articles that address Pan American biofuel and bioenergy sustainability.
