Symposium on forestry BMPs

To promote discussion of recent findings from forestry BMP effectiveness research and how they relate to such questions, NCASI and partners are organizing a Symposium on Forestry Best Management Practice Effectiveness in the Eastern U.S. for May 12-15, 2014. Symposium objectives are to (1) communicate recent research findings on BMP effectiveness in the eastern US, and (2) catalogue BMP research needs and identify directions for future research.

EPA’s “Connectivity Report”

NCASI recently submitted technical comments to the US Environmental Protection Agency on the agency’s draft report Connectivity of Streams and Wetlands to Downstream Waters: A Review and Synthesis of the Scientific Evidence. When finalized, the report will be used to inform a rulemaking process that is already underway to clarify the extent of federal jurisdiction over wetlands and non-navigable waters under the Clean Water Act in light of the Supreme Court’s 2006 decision in the Rapanos case.

A pause in global warming


Terrestrial datasets and satellite data indicate that there has not been significant global climate warming during the past 16-17 years. Most global climate models project continuous substantial warming over this period.

EPA climate adaptation plans

EPA is seeking public comment on 17 Program and Regional Adaptation Implementation Plans. Comments are due on January 3, 2014. These draft Implementation Plans and the agency’s overall draft Climate Change Adaptation Plan are part of an ongoing effort to address adaptation across the federal government, in response to Executive Order 13514 – Federal Leadership in Environmental, Energy, and Economic Performance.
