EPA issues final rule on stormwater from logging roads

EPA has published a final rule titled Revisions to Stormwater Regulations to Clarify that an NPDES Permit Is Not Required for Stormwater Discharges from Logging Roads. This rule affirms and clarifies EPA’s longstanding position that the Agency did not intend to regulate logging roads as industrial facilities when it promulgated its Phase 1 stormwater regulations.

Critical habitat for northern spotted owl

The US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) has published a final rule titled Endangered and Threatened Wildlife and Plants; Designation of Revised Critical Habitat for the Northern Spotted Owl. Designated critical habitat now includes 9.3 million acres of federal land and another 272,036 acres of state land.

Forest Service releases 2010 RPA Assessment

The Forest Service recently released its summary report on the 2010 RPA Assessment an update of its evaluation of the conditions, trends, and futures for renewable natural resources on America’s forests and rangelands. This evaluation is required by the Forest and Rangeland Renewable Resources Planning Act of 1974 and is commonly known as the RPA Assessment.

Killam Lectureship in white-tailed deer research and management awarded to Canadian scientist

In 2012, the Lectureship went beyond the US borders for the first time, and was awarded to Dr. Steeve Côté, of Laval University in Quebec City. The title of Dr. Côté’s Killam Lecture was “Feedback Effects of Overabundant White-tailed Deer Populations on Their Life-history Traits.”

The Southern Group of State Foresters (SGSF) is distributing Implementation of Forestry Best Management Practices: 2012 Southern Region Report (available at www.southernforests.org). This document summarizes results of BMP implementation surveys conducted in 11 southern states between 2007 and 2012 using the SGSF’s BMP survey “Framework.”
